Whether you have a mother, you are a mother, or you’re about to be one…Mother’s Day is that special time of the year to celebrate all of the women we call “mom”.
Speaking more strictly to the daughters here (since I am not yet a mom or planning on being one anytime soon), making sure the day is exactly what your mom is hoping for can be a big task! My mom likes things simple, but elevated at the same time – surprise, surprise haha. So breakfast in bed, a leisurely lunch, meaningful gifts, planting spring flowers, and another crisp glass of bubbly over a fuss-free dinner would be the perfect way to cap off the day.
No matter the expectation, this Mother’s Day guide is sure to give you the right ideas to make the most of this special time. Making your mom feel loved, appreciated, and cared for is the most important part, after all!
ITINERARY
Breakfast in bed is a great place to start. This is one of my mom’s favorite parts of the day – the excuse to lounge in bed for a little longer than usual and enjoy the morning, stress free. Then, the next plan of action is to take something off of her plate. Nothing huge, just make sure that any “mom” duties she had on the docket for the day are taken care of. Getting the vibe that she wants to head out for lunch? Grab your keys! Later, get ready for presents, a fuss-free dinner plan, and (of course), some champagne or sparkling wine throughout!

Barefoot Contessa’s Challah French Toast
Ingredients
- 6 eggs extra large
- 1 1/2 cups half-and-half or milk
- 1 tsp grated orange zest
- 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp good honey
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1 loaf challah or brioche bread large
- unsalted butter
- vegetable oil
To Serve
- pure maple syrup
- good raspberry preserves (optional)
- sifted confectioners sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
- In a large shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, orange zest, vanilla, honey, and salt. Slice the challah in 3/4-inch thick slices. Soak as many slices in the egg mixture as possible for 5 minutes, turning once.
- Heat 1 tablespoon butter and 1 tablespoon oil in a very large saute pan over medium heat. Add the soaked bread and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until nicely browned. Place the cooked French toast on a sheet pan and keep it warm in the oven. Fry the remaining soaked bread slices, adding butter and oil as needed, until it's all cooked. Serve hot with maple syrup, raspberry preserves, and/or confectioners' sugar.
